Top 5 Against the Clock Episodes
Against the Clock is a web series by FACT Magazine where music makers have 10 minutes to create a song from scratch. From a producer’s standpoint, this gives some real insight into creative process, techniques and tactics, arrangement, and tools from incredibly talented music makers. Here are my top 5 favorite episodes of Against the Clock.
Sowell
An internet sensation, Sowell is a master at finger drumming and creating soulful melodies. She’s just a badass – her techniques, her style, her ear, and the vibe of her music is just unbelievable. Her drum patterns and groove are so rhythmic and interesting, and she creates them so effortlessly.
Southside
Want to see how a melodic trap track is made on the spot? Watch Southside’s episode on Against the Clock. The Waka, Gucci, Wale producer crafts this 10 minutes song with just his computer keyboard. What I especially liked and took from this video is his chord changes that add variation to the track.
Artifact
What I really like about Artifact’s Against the Clock episode is that he really walks you through his process and how he is crafting his beat. He talks you through why he is doing what he is doing and then plays the piece he is working on so you can get a really good idea of process – how to add grooves and basslines to make the song feel a lot richer.
Addison Groove
Addison Groove’s Reggaeton song is just really cool. The mixture of the samples, the hats, the coconuts, and the vox really creates and awesome groove. I don’t see a lot of videos on producers creating Reggaeton, so his production was really refreshing to watch and study.
Last Japan
Last Japan makes one of the hardest beats of any of the Against the Clock episodes. The synths he uses, the drum samples, percussion – they all blend so well to make one of the hardest hitting songs of the web series.
